Northwestern Men Lose One-Goal Game at BethelArden Hills, Minn., Aug. 31, 2007 –

Only one goal was scored in Friday’s men’s soccer game featuring the Eagles versus Bethel University, and that goal went the Royals’ way.
In a contest that introduced both schools’ teams for this year, Bethel’s Bryce Bohne scored at 70:25 off a Matt Vanbenschoten corner kick to start the Royals on the right foot for the 2007 campaign.

Both teams battled, as Northwestern’s six shots on goal were just under Bethel’s tally of eight. Bethel won the corner kick battle though, as they capitalized on one of eight corners to seal the victory. The Eagles were only able to muster two corner kicks throughout the 90 minutes.

As for individual efforts, Calvin Kanowitz (St. Paul, MN/Johnson), who led the Eagles in scoring last year, had a team-high five shots, while Julio Batista (Belo Alexandria Horizonte, Brazil/EABH) had three attempts. Andreas Scott had seven shots for Bethel (1-0).

Northwestern’s featured goalkeeper in Danny King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) recorded seven saves on the night, while Bethel’s Kevin Kelly countered with six.

The Eagles, who begin the year at 0-1, will try again for Win No. 1 on Saturday, when they host Calvary Bible College for a 2 p.m. contest at Mounds View High School.
